Once Upon A Village Doll

Once Upon A Village Doll

This little freckle faced baby girl is Tanya. Last month there was a picture on the Internet of three little girls holding a sign that said "we won't change our hair for your schools". When schools opened last month there were a number of stories about little Black children being sent home because of how they were wearing their hair. My little Tanya's tee shirt makes this statement as she wears her hair natural, cornrowed, braided and beaded.

Tanya is only 9 years old but she is intelligent, outspoken, community active and "woke". Her great grandfather marched in Selma with Martin Luther King. Her mom and dad have taught her to stand up for what she believes in. One of her heroes is Angela Davis. Tanya wants to grow up and study law and help her community and maybe, just maybe one day become president. Girls can grow up and lead a country.

This is Maya. She loves animals and has lots of pets. She has two cats, four goldfish, a hamster, a bearded
dragon, a dog and a parakeet. Today, she brought her favorite teddy bear Barack to school for show and tell. She loved telling her class about her dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day and Barack is her favorite practice patient.

She's wearing her favorite dress, tights and shoes and a starfish necklace. Black girls who dream big dreams grow up with big life goals. They can be anything they choose to be.
