Once Upon A Village Doll

Once Upon A Village Doll

#Gloria Grandy
This little freckle faced baby girl is Tanya. Last month there was a picture on the Internet of three little girls holding a sign that said "we won't change our hair for your schools". When schools opened last month there were a number of stories about little Black children being sent home because of how they were wearing their hair. My little Tanya's tee shirt makes this statement as she wears her hair natural, cornrowed, braided and beaded.

Tanya is only 9 years old but she is intelligent, outspoken, community active and "woke". Her great grandfather marched in Selma with Martin Luther King. Her mom and dad have taught her to stand up for what she believes in. One of her heroes is Angela Davis. Tanya wants to grow up and study law and help her community and maybe, just maybe one day become president. Girls can grow up and lead a country.

This is Maya. She loves animals and has lots of pets. She has two cats, four goldfish, a hamster, a bearded
dragon, a dog and a parakeet. Today, she brought her favorite teddy bear Barack to school for show and tell. She loved telling her class about her dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day and Barack is her favorite practice patient.

She's wearing her favorite dress, tights and shoes and a starfish necklace. Black girls who dream big dreams grow up with big life goals. They can be anything they choose to be.

Work In Progress

This is my current work in progress. It will be a memory doll for a friend. She gave me some small treasures that she has saved and collected over the years. I have incorporated a lot of them in the doll's clothes. The doll will have a little tote bag that will hold the rest of my friend's treasures.

My little boy flat doll bookmarks are ready to raise money for a charity event this month. They will be donated by Sonja Lopes.

Malik is a 21-1/2" tall art pedestal stump doll. He  has an all cotton torso with poly-fill and a wooden base that allows him to stand. His garment is made from a cotton lined burlap with fringed edges. The center panel is a red cotton kente cloth print. He has natural hair dreadlocks and a hand painted mask face and carries a feathered griot walking stick. A friend bought one of my masked dolls a few months ago and called him "Burlap Man". I loved the name because it almost made him sound like a super hero. So, this "Burlap Man" is part of my "Tribal Energy Dolls" collection.

He is a one of a kind art doll, available for adoption. The fee is $95.00 plus tax and shipping. Payment can be made on PayPal. ONE ONLY. First come first serve. Email me at: cre8tivglory@gmail.com .

Ariah is a 21-1/2" art pedestal doll. She has an all cotton torso with poly-fill and a wooden base that allows her to stand. She wears a beautiful full length cotton, geometric print skirt and matching bra top in shades of turquoise, pink and red.  She is also wearing matching bracelets and waist beads and gold hoop earrings. She has curly natural hair wrapped in a turquoise head wrap. She's carrying a colorful striped tote bag ready to fill with good things from the marketplace.

She is a beautiful decorative doll (not suitable for children, not a toy) from my new "Once Upon A Village" collection. My inspiration comes from my favorite artist Paul Nzalamba. This collection of dolls are faceless which is a style used by many African American artists and doll artists. Without a face, an artist must use other elements to tell the story.

She is a one of a kind art doll, available for adoption. The fee is $95.00 plus tax and shipping. Payment can be made on PayPal. ONE ONLY. First come first serve. Email me at: cre8tivglory@gmail.com .
